We had the opportunity in my most recent class to research a social media tool. I use Facebook everyday for work and we had recently moved over to a non-profit Facebook page. I felt this was the perfect opportunity to dive in and learn all I could.
One of the most impressive things I found was the sheer numbers involved with Facebook. I think of this has the section “does Facebook really matter?” This data comes from page 31 in Michael Lewis’ book, “Social Media Leadership: How to Get off the Bench and Into the Game”
- 200 million users in 2009
- 275 million new (emphasis added by author) registered users in 2010
- 650 million active users in 2011
- 35 million users who update their status every day
- 30 billion content pieces shared monthly
If those numbers don’t say Facebook is important, I don’t know what does.
I also found this cool infographic on Dub Clicks.
It says there are 845 million active users on Facebook (up from Lewis’ numbers). Gender usage is almost split half and half. The income and education level are really interesting when you consider Facebook was first created for college students to connect with each other.
All of this was a real eye opener for me.
